For my Character Design final, I have to design the cast of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, this is what I’m looking at for Captain Nemo. We had a choice of different stories to do, a lot of people are doing 20,000 Leagues and I noticed most of the other Nemo’s are kind of well-groomed, well-kept guys.
I guess I just wanted to make him a little grizzlier, because I figured someone who’s been exiled at sea for many years and hates society probably doesn’t give two shits about the way they look.
Have I mentioned Yoji Shinkawa is my favorite artist… ever?

So when I was in Hawaii, we got Charlie at 8 weeks old from the pet store at Windward Mall in Kaneohe. My wife really wanted a dog, and so did I, and after some failed attempts at adopting a dog at the Humane Society we found Charlie and fell in love with him. Well, my wife knew that I secretly really wanted a cat, so (literally) the next day she drove out to Waianae and picked up a 6 week old orange kitten.
He was always kind of off-kilter, we figured he only understood Spanish so we named him Gato.
Charlie and Gato grew up in Hawaii together, they would play all the time and loved eachother like brothers. Fast forward to when I left the Marine Corps last year in 2010, we could only take one animal with us to our new apartment in California, so naturally we took Charlie since he’s the best dog in the world. The cat, fortunately, was adopted by my wife’s parents and has been spoiled every day since then.
Any way, long story short, this weekend in Portland was the first time Charlie and Gato had seen each other in about a year and a half. Nevertheless, they remembered each other immediately and started playing.
How do I know Charlie remembered the Gato? Because Charlie is afraid of cats!

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
 And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
 - Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

cute.

cute.
